She was a traditional and modern a Mexican-American star who bound together both worlds in a singular way--and delivered incredible Tejano music to a mainstream crowd. It was her sudden death that destroyed her reputation. That's what happens to many stars who pass away too early. Selena's tragic murder by a gunman triggered the outpouring of emotions within Latino communities similar the way people reacted following Elvis Presley's death and John Lennon's. Selena was a hugely loved Latino singer throughout North America. Her music transcended cultural barriers and inspired both young people and older adults. Selena was a hot glamorous performer on stage that was frequently called her as the Latina Madonna. On stage, Selena was an excellent role model since she actively participated in antidrug and AIDS campaigning.
